GWC 2009

The 3rd Gomoku World Championship was organized in Pardubice, Czech Republic, 2009.08.06. - 2009.08.13.

18 years passed since the last GWC so people expected a lot of changes. Most importantly the opening rule was reformed, RIF set "swap2" the official opening rule instead of "pro". This made the whole game more fair and playable. The time limit of all gomoku events was 80 minutes+30sec/move.

The first event was the Qualification Tournament (7 rounds, swiss system), anyone could take part. The first 8 players of QT got the right to advance to the final. 21 players took part and 4 countries' players reached the final: Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary and Taiwan.

In the final everyone player 1 game vs all others so there were 7 rounds. Eventually there was a triple tie as 3 players had the same point (6) and coefficient. In order to decide the world champion title, organizers held a tiebreak match with 20 minutes + 5 sec/move time limit. Artur Tamiola from Poland was able to defeat both Attila Demján and Pavel Laube so he became the 3rd Gomoku World Champion, at the age of 22.

Next to the final there was the first Gomoku B Tournament organized. It was an international open tournament where 18 players took part and Igor Eged from Slovakia came out as winner.
